No injuries reported after gas line rupture leads to fire in Stark County

The fire in Pike Township has been controlled. Sheriff's deputies say Marathon Petroleum is onsite assisting authorities as part of the investigation.

EAST SPARTA, Ohio — Police and fire crews teamed up to deal with a gas line rupture and fire in Stark County on Wednesday.

According to a release from the Stark County Sheriff's Office, numerous 911 calls came in at around 10:45 a.m. reporting "a possible explosion and fire" on Briggle Avenue Southwest in Pike Township.

Deputies assisted the East Sparta Volunteer Fire Department at the scene of the blaze in the 9100 block of Briggle Avenue SW. While fire crews worked to contain the flames, Briggle Avenue SW was temporarily closed between Downing Street and Ullet Street SW. The road was reopened at around noon.

No injuries have been reported. Sheriff's deputies say Marathon Petroleum is onsite assisting authorities as part of the ongoing investigation.

“This is a great testament to how we as a community, come together to ensure the safety of Stark County. I am proud of the swift response and teamwork displayed by our deputies, the East Sparta Volunteer Fire Department, Marathon Petroleum, and others involved,” said Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier in a statement. “It’s through collaboration like this that we can continue to keep Stark County safe.”
