MASSILLON, Ohio — An investigation is underway after a student found a round of ammunition in a locker at Jackson Memorial Middle School in Massillon on Tuesday morning.
According to Jackson Local Schools, the school was put into a shelter-in-place at 9:37 a.m. out of "an abundance of caution." After security swept the middle school, the shelter-in-place was lifted at 10:01 a.m.
The Jackson Township Police Department says that the ammunition was found in a shared locker used to store band instruments.
Police also noted that it is unknown when/how the round of ammunition got into the school.
"There have been no threats to the school. The school is secure and all students are safe," said Jackson Township police in a press release.
At this time, school administrators are continuing to work with law enforcement officers to investigate the incident.
"We applaud the student who discovered the weathered round for seeing something and saying something. We thank you for your understanding and continued support in keeping our schools safe," said Superintendent Chris DiLoreto.
