YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — A 49-year-old man is in police custody on Tuesday after a brief standoff with law enforcement in Mahoning County.
The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) arrested Michael Burns at a hotel in Austintown.
According to reports, Burns was wanted for violating his probation issued by the Stark County Probation Officer. He was placed on probation after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter with weapons back in 2017.
Through its investigation, the NOVFTF learned that Burns was residing at a hotel in the the 800 block of Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown.
When they arrived and made contact with Burns, he fired at least one round from a firearm. After several minutes, he was convinced by officers to come out and he was taken into custody.
“Our officers did an outstanding job of tracking down a suspect who was already convicted of taking a life. We are thankful that no one was injured or killed as a result of this suspect’s dangerous actions," said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott.
No law enforcement officers or the suspect were injured during the arrest. Officials did recover a firearm from the scene, and it was previously reported stolen.
Burns was booked at the Mahoning County Jail will he will remain until he can be extradited to Stark County for his pending case. Further charges from the Austintown Police and the United States Attorney’s Office are still being reviewed.
