Stark County officials warn about scam calls involving detective impersonator requesting money

A caller identifying themselves as "Detective Whitehouse" attempted to collect funds on behalf of the Stark County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities in Stark County want residents to be on alert because of a new phone scam that is targeting the sheriff's office.

On Wednesday afternoon, North Canton Police received a complaint from a potential victim who alleges that he received a call from someone who identified themselves as “Detective Whitehouse” from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.

In the call, the impersonator told the victim that they failed to comply with a legal requirement of the Sheriff’s Office. The victim was requested to get $2,000 in Google Play Cards and provide the scammer with the card codes. A number was given to the victim to call which duplicates the County Sheriff’s call system but it is not connected to the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff George Maier and the Stark County Sheriff's Office wish to advise residents that it is not the policy of the office to call and request funds or payments for Sheriff's services.

While this case remains under investigation, Sheriff Maier would like to remind citizens that it is not an operating policy of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office to call and request funds or payments for Sheriff’s services. Report any suspicious activity to your local police department and/or the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office continues to work closely with North Canton Police in the investigation.
