STARK COUNTY, Ohio — An investigation is underway after a plane crashed in Stark County on Thursday afternoon.
Ohio State Highway Patrol officials told 3News that the crash happened in the area of Sherman Church Avenue SW and Riverdale Street SW in Bethlehem Township when a friend of the plane's owner was flying.
Authorities initially told 3News there were no injuries connected to the crash, but in an update provided a short time later we learned the pilot did sustain a minor injury.
However, the Ohio State Highway Patrol noted that they did not receive a call about the crash until Friday morning at 9:34 a.m.
Upon initial investigation, it is suspected that the plane experienced an equipment malfunction, and the pilot attempted to land it safely in the field.
"The pilot landed the plane successfully but then struck a culvert," Ohio State Highway Patrol officials said in a media release.
The plane's owner advised authorities that the pilot was picked up yesterday from the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.
