NAVARRE, Ohio — Two Stark County teenagers have one fun and unique thing to be thankful for this holiday season.
Fairless High School seniors Jacob Lyon and Brock Hrynko will head to New York City soon to take part in the 95th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade after they took up their director's call to audition for the band and were picked out of hundreds of submissions.
Director Elizabeth Barkan explained to her classmates this year that anyone can submit an audition for the band and she even offered extra credit to any of her students who applied. Little did she know that it would pay off for not one but two of her students!
Jacob plays sousaphone while Brock plays trumpet. Once their director offered up the trip, they both submitted an audition tape that showed off their musical abilities and marching skills, as well as a written application for the event.
The boys will make up two pieces of the 185-person band this year to march in the parade, and Barkan will be smiling and cheering them along in New York City. The group also plans to sight-see while in New York, but they say they need help to pull off this once in a lifetime opportunity.
The trip is not funded by the school or the parade, so everything is out-of-pocket. There is a GoFundMe set up to help them with expenses. If you would like to donate, click here.
