Massillon City Council has signed off on an agreement with Affinity which will close the city's hospital on February 11.
The terms of the deal provides the city of Massillon with more than $25 million dollars in property on the Affinity Medical Center campus.
The city would also be allowed to pursue options for the space, including an employee or community owned-hospital in Affinity's place.
“I personally want to extend my deepest appreciation and admiration to our teams at the hospital for their professionalism and the care they provided our patients throughout this uncertain time,” said Affinity CEO John Walsh in a statement. “We are pleased to have a finalized plan allowing for the long-term ownership arrangement sought by the city. The agreement helps establish a path forward for Massillon as it decides what type of healthcare services are needed to address the community’s needs.”

Affinity will continue to operate the Emergency Room and will provide care to patients already in the hospital, but will not provide surgical services and will discontinue accepting new inpatient admissions. All physician clinic operations owned by the hospital will remain open until March 6, the original date the hospital had committed to for allowing ownership to be transitioned to the physicians or to other local healthcare providers.
