2-vehicle crash on State Route 18 in Summit County leaves 1 dead

Joseph J. Perry Jr. was pronounced dead on the scene by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office due to injuries sustained by the initial impact.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio — A fatal two-vehicle crash took place on State Route 18 in Bath Township Saturday morning.

At approximately 2:28 a.m., a Chevy S-10 pick-up was driving westbound on State Route 18 when the driver of the S-10 struck the rear of a Kenworth semi truck. The S-10 then crossed the roadway coming to a stop in a nearby ditch. 

The pick-up was identified as Joseph J. Perry Jr., age 16, of Elyria.

The driver of the Kenworth semi is identified as Michael J. Smith, age 47 of Canton.

Perry Jr. was pronounced dead on the scene by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office due to injuries sustained by the initial impact. He was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident. 

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, alcohol and or drug use is currently being investigated.

Smith did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash.

This incident remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
