BARBERTON, Ohio — Two teens are in custody following an alleged robbery attempt that ended with a man being shot this past weekend in Barberton.
Police say the incident occurred early Sunday evening, when the victim said he was walking near 5th Street Northeast and Jefferson Avenue with a firearm in his possession. He told investigators the two teens tried to take the gun from him, and during this the victim was struck by a bullet to the abdomen. He was eventually taken to an area hospital with what were deemed non-life-threatening injures.
The 16-year-old suspects — one from Barberton and one from Akron — were later apprehended and are now both charged with attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and felonious assault. The pair are currently being held in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.
The investigation into this case remains ongoing, with authorities saying additional charges could be coming.
