CLEVELAND — An Akron man died after drowning while fishing in Springfield Lake early Sunday morning, police said.
According to a news release from Springfield Township Police Chief Jack Simone, police were notified that John Wisener, 44, was in distress in the water just before 1:20 a.m. Sunday. Wisener's fishing partner swam to shore and told police Wisener had fallen into the lake.
Simone said an officer "immediately jumped into the water" but was unable to find Wisener.
Fire crews and water rescuers arrived to assist in the search.
Members of the South Summit Water Rescue team found Wisener's body in approximately seven feet of water at around 5:30 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police investigation found Wisener had been fishing from a boat and fell into the lake for an "unknown reason."
Wisener's body was turned over to the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office for examination.
