Akron man found guilty of murder, robbery

The verdict stems from a June 2018 crime.

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man was found guilty of murder and robbery in Summit County Court Tuesday.

24-year-old Christian Pittman was found guilty of several charges including murder with firearm, aggravated robbery with a firearm, aggravated burglary and tampering with evidence. 

The charges stem from a June 2018 robbery at an Akron apartment. 

According to police, Pittman and co-defendant Cenqunn Woods robbed Michael-Ann Benton,29, at the Norka Avenue apartment he shared with 28-year-old Diamond Smith,28. 

As the two were fleeing, they were confronted by Smith who had just arrived home. Pittman fired several shots at Smith, killing him. The two split up and continued to flee the scene. 

Summit County Common Pleas court Judge Kelly McLaughlin is scheduled to sentence Pittman on January 16, 2020 at 1pm.

Woods’ trial has not yet to been scheduled.
