Akron man pleads guilty to driving van into two people, killing one

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man plead guilty to murder and aggravated vehicular assault in Summit County Common Pleas Court Wednesday. 

In March 2019, 28-year-old Daniel Shmigal drove a van into two people, ultimately killing one and seriously injuring another. 

Shmigal purposely hit Derek Smith and Charles Holden as they walked near the intersection of Virginia and Barbara Avenues. 

Shmigal's wife is friends with the victim and an argument between the two ensured prior to the incident. 

Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands is scheduled to sentence Shmigal on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 11am.
