An Akron man was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of a 59-year-old man in Summit County Common Pleas Court Wednesday.
59-year-old Dereke Alexander was confronted and fatally shot outside of Baho Convenience store on West Market Street in Akron in November of 2017.
Alexander was shot by Jerry Alford, 36, of Crosby Street in Akron. He was sentenced to life in prison, Wednesday, by Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh. His accomplice, 34-year-old Dexter Moore, was charged with felonious assault and obstructing justice. He was sentenced to five years for his role in the shooting.
“This was a senseless and evil act over a $60 dollar debt. Dereke Alexander was a beloved brother, father, and son. The family and community will feel the pain of his loss for a long time,” said Walsh.
Alford was found guilty of murder with a gun specification and having weapon while under disability back in March. He will be eligible for parole after serving 21 years.
