Copley-Fairlawn teacher and her husband killed in Summit County crash

Caitlin Davis had been with the district since August 2020.

NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio — EDITOR'S NOTE: The video in the player above is from a previous, unrelated story.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that killed a Copley-Fairlawn teacher and her husband.

The crash happened Tuesday night in New Franklin in Summit County. State Highway Patrol troopers say Caitlin and Jared Davis were driving southbound on Cleveland-Massillon Road when a car driven by George Wasley attempted to turn left in front of them. The Davis' car hit Wasley's, and the Davis' became trapped inside. Emergency personnel had to cut them out of the car at the scene.

Caitlin Davis was taken to Barberton Citizen's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Jared Davis was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, where he later died.

Wasley was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, where he was treated for moderate injuries.

Copley-Fairlawn City Schools issued the following statement Wednesday:

"It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that Copley-Fairlawn City Schools announces the tragic death of Intervention Specialist Caitlin Davis and her husband, Jared, on the evening of Tuesday, August 3.

"Caitlin has been a teacher at Copley-Fairlawn Middle School since August 2020, making an immediate impact on her students during a difficult period.“Caitlin’s presence was one of absolute joy and eagerness to help her students,” said Copley Superintendent Brian Poe. “She was a fantastic teacher for Copley-Fairlawn Middle School and was an incredible influence on those she worked with. We are saddened by the loss of Caitlin and husband, Jared, and join her family, friends and colleagues in mourning.”

"Counselors are available for students and staff from noon-3:00 today at Copley-Fairlawn Middle School and on Thursday from 8:00-3:00."

The crash is still under investigation, but neither alcohol nor drugs are expected to be a factor.
