CUYAHOGA FALLS -- A controversial televangelist from Akron is now facing a lawsuit from The U.S. Department of Labor. Ernest Angley's Cathedral Buffet is taking some heat for alleged labor violations.
The US Department of Labor alleges that the Cathedral Buffet classified some of its employees as volunteers. They also say the Cuyahoga Falls restaurant owned by the televangelist Ernest Angley owes more than $207,000 in back wages to more than 200 workers.
These were people working there as cooks janitors, waiters and cashiers all being classified as unpaid volunteers.
We talked to some of the folks who live in the area and have eaten at the restaurant to get their reaction.
"I feel that they should be paid," said Cuyahoga Falls resident Frank Hosterman. "If the people work there, they should get paid. If they don't want pay, they can give it back to the church, it's as simple as that."
All in all, the department says the restaurant and Angley violated minimum wage, overtime and child labor sections of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The suit calls for repayment of back wages and damages to the affected employees.
