AKRON, Ohio -- A Perry Local Schools teacher was critically injured when a rock was deliberately dropped from a highway overpass onto the windshield of the family's car in Pennsylvania.
Fifty-two-year-old Sharon Budd was struck in the face by the rock dropped onto Interstate 80 near Milton, Pennsylvania, on Thursday.
Four teens are charged with assault for dropping the 7- to 8-pound rock from an overpass.
Her husband, Randy Budd, tells the Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/1krXlqI ) she still is in critical condition at a hospital in Danville, Pennsylvania, and was to have surgery Tuesday.
She was sitting in the front passenger seat. Randy Budd and their 19-year-old daughter Kaylee - who was driving - were not injured.
The family was en route to York City.
The school district's website posted the following message today:
Sharon Budd is a very special person in so many people's lives. She has the ability to befriend anyone and always does. Her smile, contageous laughter, and hilarious stories and jokes are enough to bring sunshine to anyone's day.
Sharon, her husband Randy, and her daughter Kaylee were driving to New York City on Thursday, July 10th when an unimaginable act of violence and stupidity was committed. Sharon was hit by a boulder thrown from an overpass while Kaylee was at the wheel. The boulder struck her in the face, causing severe damage. It is a miracle that Kaylee was able to get the car stopped safely. Kaylee has been so strong…as have Randy, Luke, James, and Joey. It's the kind of strength they learned from Sharon when she fought and BEAT breast cancer 15 years ago. They are supporting Sharon now as she fights for her life at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. Sharon remains in critical condition after having emergency brain surgery to allow her brain to swell.
Now, let's come together in love and support for the incredible Sharon Budd and her family. Sharon is and has always been a fighter. She has a long road to recovery ahead of her and if we can make that road just a bit more manageable for her and her family, let's do it!
