Driver killed in fiery tanker truck crash on State Route 8

The ramps from State Route 8 northbound to I-271 northbound and I-271 southbound to SR 8 southbound are still currently closed.

MACEDONIA, — A driver of a tanker truck is dead following a fiery crash on State Route 8 in Summit County. 

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says that the crash happened at around 9:15 a.m. at the ramp to Interstate 271 north in Northfield Center Township.

After an initial investigation, deputies determined a tanker truck had been traveling northbound on State Route 8 and attempted to get on I-271 north when the truck lost control and went over the side of the bridge.

Officials say that the truck landed on the southbound lanes of State Route 8 and went up in flames. The driver of the tanker truck died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

ROAD CLOSURES

The ramps from State Route 8 northbound to I-271 northbound / I-271 southbound to SR 8 southbound are still currently closed. Additionally, State Route 8 southbound between Highland Road and Hines Hill Road are also still closed. 

Drivers are being advised to use alternate routes as the Summit County Sheriff's Office says that the road will remain closed until the bridge can be inspected for safety. 

ODOT tells 3News that more inspections are planned for Sunday once there is daylight. 

"Those inspections will let us know the extent of any damage and what repairs will be needed," said ODOT officials. 

The Ohio Department of Transportation released video footage to 3News that their traffic cameras caught of the fiery crash. The video was obtained via a public records request and can be watched below: 

EPA officials confirmed to 3News that the tanker was carrying 7,500 gallons of diesel. The nearby Brandywine Creek has been impacted with diesel from the crash. The creek briefly caught fire after the accident. 

Currently, the crash is under investigation by the Summit Metro Crash Team.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Units, along with deputies from the Summit County Jail, responded to the scene. The Summit County HAZMAT Team, Macedonia Fire Department, Twinsburg Fire Department, and other local fire departments also responded to the scene.
