AKRON, Ohio — The Summit County Public Health Department is sounding the alarm following a troubling rise in drug overdose deaths this past weekend.
Officials say there have been seven suspected fatal overdoses since Friday, triggering a public health alert after consulting with the County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Board and the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office. In addition, there has also been a "steady increase" in overdose-related emergency room visits over the last five weeks.
Per the health department, at least 82% of all overdose deaths so far this year have involved fentanyl. Cuyahoga County issued its own alert last month and gave a similar assessment.
Summit County authorities have offered the following tips to those using or struggling with opioid addiction:
- Have Naloxone (Narcan) and fentanyl test strips ready: Both of these are available through Summit County Public Health's website for free here or through the Summit Safe anonymous Harm Reduction clinics at the following dates and times:
- Summit County Public Health Fairway Center: Fridays 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
- AxessPointe Community Health Centers/Arlington: Mondays noon-3 p.m., Wednesdays 3-6 p.m.
- Never use alone: The risk of fatal overdose is increased when using alone. Be sure someone you trust is nearby or call the National Overdose Prevention Lifeline at (800) 484-3731 or the National Crisis Line at 988.
- Call 911: An overdose is a medical emergency. Even if you are able to give the victim naloxone they should still seek medical attention. The Good Samaritan law provides immunity for drug possession or paraphernalia offenses for both the victim AND the person who calls for help.
- Reach out for help: Addiction is a treatable disease and Recovery is possible. This journey looks different for each individual but help is available. For a list of resources please call the ADM Board 24/7 Addiction Helpline at (330) 940-1133 or one of the following resources:
