Summit County Sheriff's Office: Mother left 2 young children home alone to go to Cleveland concert

'During questioning, she did not appear to be concerned with her children's welfare,' deputies said of Angelique Sayre.

AKRON, Ohio — Deputies in Summit County this past weekend arrested a Coventry Township woman who allegedly left her two young children home alone to go to a concert in Cleveland.

Officials were first called to the Wymore Avenue apartment late Sunday afternoon, when a neighbor's friend called police to inform them 23-year-old Angelique Sayre had left her kids unsupervised. When a deputy arrived, "no responsible adult came to the door," and at least one child could be heard crying before a landlord unlocked the residence.

Once inside, the deputy found a 2-year-old girl naked with tears in her eyes as well as a 1-year-old boy asleep in a play pen, along with dirty clothes and "minimal food." The neighbor subsequently shared surveilance footage showing Sayre leaving her home around 3:15 p.m., and further claimed she had left her kids alone multiple times before.

The deputy was eventually able to call Sayre on her cell phone and ordered her to return home, which she did around 6:08 p.m. A police report claimed Sayre "did not appear to be concerned with her children's welfare," and she further stated she had planned on returning from the concert by 9:30 p.m. This would've left the kids alone for more than six hours.

Adding to the situation, Sayre eventually admitted one of her children has autism and that there was a gun in the apartment, which officials safely secured. Deputies also discovered an open window in the back of the home, which they were able to enter through without issue.

Sayre has been charged with two counts of endangering children, a first-degree misdemeanor. Her kids were released into the custody of Summit County Children's Services.
