Kyle Schwarber, the 23-year-old Chicago Cubs outfielder, is making history in the World Series.
But, once upon a time, his fall classics included Friday night football game at Middletown (Ohio) High School. That included, as the above photograph indicates, chasing elusive quarterbacks like Braxton Miller of Hubert Heights’ Wayne High School.
Before going on to play baseball at Indiana University and then quickly climbing the professional ladder to play for the Cubs, Schwarber was an all-state middle linebacker.At Middletown, the Cubs’ latest cult hero played alongside the likes of Ohio State alum and current New York Jets wide receiver Jalin Marshall.
It was one of Marshall’s Ohio State teammates, the current Houston Texans rookie wide receiver Miller, who made Schwarber miss in the star-packed photo.
Miller, of course, was a five-star recruit as a quarterback at Wayne before going on to play QB – then WR – for Ohio State. He is currently battling a hamstring injury and has five catches for 34 yards for Houston.
Who knows how Schwarber’s football career could have gone had he stayed on the gridiron path?
His recovery from a serious knee injury to step right into the World Series spotlight says a great deal about his determination that would have served him well on a college football field.
Based on one single snapshot (a tip o’ the cap to Miller and Cincinnati-based reporter Jeff Wallner for putting the photo out there), both indeed made some wise career decisions.
