Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley confirmed that three men have been indicted for their roles in a drive-by shooting that resulted in the deaths of Tywain Johnson, 15, and David Wilder, 61, on March 25, about 1:30 p.m.
The defendants -- Terrell Gray, Kassius Williams, and Charles Walker—were driving westbound on Woodland Avenue between E. 89th Street and Buckeye Road, according to the indictment.
O'Malley said that while they were driving, they fired on a vehicle that had one adult, 20, and two teens -- 15 and 17. Johnson was struck three times and died.
During the shooting, according to O'Malley, Wilder was also traveling westbound on Woodland Avenue, several car lengths behind the shooting. That's when a stray bullet struck Wilder and killed him, O'Malley said.
O'Malley added that Gray, Williams and Walker drove to St. Vincent Charity’s emergency room to treat Gray for a gunshot wound to his hand.
In response to the gunshot wound, the hospital contacted Cleveland Police, who arrested the three defendants at the hospital. Walker was charged with carrying a concealed weapon for bringing a firearm onto hospital property.
Williams was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon for bringing a firearm into a convenience store prior to the drive-by shooting.
Wilder, of Cleveland, was an adjunct professor at both John Carroll University and Cleveland State University.
“While this level of violence is shocking, it is becoming all too familiar in our City,” said O’Malley, in a news release.
“I will fight to ensure that these defendants receive the maximum sentence of incarceration permitted by law.”
O'Malley said the defendants were charged with two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder committed as a result of discharging a firearm on a public roadway, two counts of murder committed as a result of a felonious assault, two counts of discharging a firearm on a public roadway, four counts of felonious assault, and one count of Improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.
Williams and Walker have additional charges for carrying a concealed weapon.
Their arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. April 14.
