KENT, Ohio - — Northeast Ohio's apple harvest is just beginning, including the popular Honeycrisp variety.
But how's the harvest?
A recent article from the Associated Press says weather ruined the crop, but is that true?
I spoke with Sally Beckwith from Beckwith Orchards near Kent and Bob Rogish from Patterson Fruit Farm in Geauga County to verify whether Honeycrisps will be available this year or not.
One thing is certain according to Rogish: "It's farmers vs Mother Nature and we never win. She always takes the lead on it."
Beckwith adds, "just a few miles can make a big difference in somebody's crop."
Every year, farms roll the dice, regardless of the crop. Some win, some lose, and most are happy to break even. This year at Beckwith Orchards, the Honeycrisps are in and available.
"I'm real pleased with our Honeycrisp crop," Sally Beckwith tells us. "Some were a little small, didn't have the best color but the flavor is certainly still excellent."
Their Honeycrisps earned a second place ribbon in this year's Portage County Fair.
After checking out their crop, I jumped in the news van and headed North to Pattersons. They, too, have Honeycrisps available.
"We've had just a perfect amount of rain this summer," says Rogish. "The heat? Yeah it's a little hot, but it's going to cool down and we'll see some nice color on the Honeycrisps. We hope to have a very good crop this year."
So did the lack of rain and hot weather ruin the Honeycrip crop?
The answer -- is no. And that's verified.
How do you like those apples?
