Community steps up after 'Walls of Love' signs are taken

It has been said that “no good deed goes unpunished.

CLEVELAND — It has been said that “no good deed goes unpunished.”

One local woman may be learning that the hard way.

Holly Jackson is the force behind more than 50 “Walls of Love.”

They are places where people can take what they need to stay warm, or else, pay it forward by leaving something for someone else.

But her act of kindness has been met with cruelty. Six signs have disappeared in recent days.

“I was very disheartened, and I was literally crying because this project means so much to me,” Jackson said. “I would rather spend the money on people and giving back to the community, rather than paying for new signs."

Yet people like Lane Schlessel of Lyndhurst are stepping up.

The councilman offered to replace the signs, which cost about eighty dollars each.

“I was upset that someone would steal signs for doing good for others,” he said. “My wife and I would be honored to do it just to help others, and especially her project.”

Yet they may not need to.

Jackson says Visual Marketing Systems, a company out of Twinsburg, beat them to it. She spoke with the Schlessels, who hope to help in other ways.

If you would like to help, there will be a fundraiser on April 7 at Cleveland’s Local Eatery in the 6000 block of Memphis Avenue. The event goes from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.
