We asked Neil Durbin from Dominion East Ohio what he recommends.
He says 68 degrees Fahrenheit is a good setting if you're comfortable with that. Even a few degrees lower is OK, he says, if you don't mind putting on a sweater.
A good rule of thumb, he says, is that you save 1 percent on your heating bill for every degree you lower your thermostat.

He says there are three variables that go into what you pay for your monthly heating bill:
1. The amount of insulation in your home.
2. The efficiency (and age) of your furnace.
3. The individual comfort level of the people in your home.
No two houses are alike, Durbin warns.
When it comes to individual comfort level, Durbin says that anyone with elderly adults or small children in the home will likely need to keep their thermostat set higher.
If you'll be out of your home for a period of time, Durbin says 50 to 55 degrees is about as low as you want to go so you don't risk pipes freezing.
