LAKE COUNTY, Ohio — The Wickliffe City School superintendent took things to new heights in honor of fundraising on Wednesday.
At the Cleveland Skydive Center, located in Garrettsville, Joe Spiccia went skydiving for the first time in his life to help raise money for the United Way of Lake County.
The skydiving activity was part of the United Way's Community Hero Hijinx series where "18 community heroes who believe in giving back performed a variety of individual fundraising activities to raise donations on behalf of UWLC."
Spicccia and his partner Wickliffe City School System Director of Strategic Innovation, Julie Ramos raised more than $1,100. Their top donor was twenty-eight year Wickliffe City School board member Don Marn, who donated $131 and secured a spot on the plane when Spiccia took the plunge.
In total, UWLC’s May Community Hero Hijinx Fundraiser and Virtual Raffle raised nearly $74,000 to help Lake County children and families in need.
The two-part virtual fundraiser was help in place of the United Way's annual Celebrity Server event that is held annually in March. This is the second year the organization has been unable to host their popular 500 person St. Patty’s Day themed event due to the pandemic.
