Hit-skip crash kills unborn child, injures 3 others; Lorain Police searching for driver

LORAIN, Ohio — The Lorain Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-skip crash that occurred on Friday, August 21 at the intersection of W. 21st Street and Ashland Avenue.

At approximately 11:24 p.m., a 2020 silver Cadillac SUV was traveling northbound on Ashland Avenue, approaching the intersection with W. 21st Street at a high rate of speed. A 2010 white Kia Forte was traveling eastbound on W. 21st Street approaching the intersection with Ashland Avenue. As the Kia Forte entered the intersection, the Cadillac SUV failed to stop at the posted stop sign and collided with the Kia Forte. 

The Cadillac SUV ran off the road, over-turned and came to rest on its roof. The driver of the Cadillac SUV, identified by witnesses as a Black male, wearing a white shirt and red shorts, fled the scene on foot and could not be located after an extensive search.

The Kia Forte came to rest on Ashland Avenue, north of the intersection. The driver, identified as Alisia McCoy, 29, of Lorain, was pregnant and traveling with her two sons, ages 10 and five years old.

McCoy was critically injured in the crash and was rushed to MercyHealth, by LifeCare where she underwent emergency surgery and remains in serious condition. Her unborn child did not survive, as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Both of McCoy's two children were also seriously injured during the crash. The ten-year-old boy was life-flighted to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland for medical treatment, his current condition is unknown. The five-year-old boy was also transported to MercyHealth where he underwent treatment and was later released. 

Responding crews closed the intersection of the crash for approximately six hours while the scene was investigated and processed for physical evidence. 

"Whoever is responsible for causing this deadly crash should spare this family anymore trauma and turn yourself in," Traffic Commission Kyle Gelenius said. "We have your DNA, we have your cell phones. It's only a matter of time until you're identified and brought to justice. Do the right thing and turn yourself in."

The Lorain Police Department is asking that anyone with information regarding the crash contact the Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau at 440-204-2115.
