Miami University president releases letter to the community after professor allegedly called protesters 'a bunch of monkeys'

Miami President Gregory Crawford said in the letter that the professor denies the allegations and wrote 'everyone has a right to free speech.'

OXFORD, Ohio — On Thursday, a video surfaced on social media of what many are claiming to be a current Miami University online professor, just after pulling up to a rally and calling a group of protestors 'a bunch of monkeys.'

Miami University President Gregory Crawford issued a statement to students and facility early Friday morning, saying in part, "videos, texts, and surveys were distributed, and people who were there, community members, and city council members, sent emails regarding the incident, including quotes."

Crawford is referring to the hundreds of videos, pictures, and comments on social media calling the professor out and asking for his resignation letter or his removal from the school.

'The individual has denied the allegations and is a retired faculty member, currently teaching an online course," Crawford said in the letter. "No student will be required to take a course from this faculty member. Our academic leaders are working to make this happen."

Students and alumni expressed outrage over social media following the announcement that the professor will not be removed or reprimanded.

One Facebook user commented on the original video saying 'this man, before even saying this, was obviously the most sexist and racist professor on campus. He should've been fired long ago.'

Another user commented 'this doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Same guy told me I was "too pretty to be an engineer."'

A change.org petition to remove the professor has received more than 6,000 signatures in less than a day.
