8-year-old student brings loaded gun to Midview elementary school; no one injured

The gun apparently never left the student's backpack and there "was no imminent danger."

A Midview elementary school student was arrested Wednesday after police say he brought a loaded semi-automatic handgun to the school and.

The incident occurred at North Elementary School on Durkee Road. The 8-year-old child apparently showed the weapon to some of his classmates and one of them told a teacher, and "within minutes" the gun was in the possession of Superintendent Bruce Willingham, who then called the Lorain County Sheriff's Office.

According to Dr. Willingham, the gun never left the student's backpack and there "was no imminent danger." The student who brought it in was remanded to his parents' custody, and charges are currently pending in Lorain County Juvenile Court.

"The Lorain County Sheriff's Office would like to commend the student who alerted the teacher about this situation and the actions of the Midview School staff," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "The actions of this brave student, and the school staff likely prevented a tragedy."
