A mother and her boyfriend charged in the death of a 4-year-old Euclid girl last year both appeared in court Tuesday afternoon.
Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis appeared at a hearing at 2 p.m. in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. Both are charged with aggravated murder in the death of Aniya Day-Garrett last February.
The murder trial of Day and Lewis is set to begin Wednesday at 9 a.m. in Judge Timothy McCormick's courtroom. The case has sent shock waves through the community, with many blaming Cuyahoga County children's services for not protecting Aniya from an allegedly abusive home.
In response, the county later announced several changes to children's services, including the hiring of more case workers. In addition, the state of Ohio revoked the licenses of two daycare centers Aniya attended, saying they each failed to report abuse against her.
