WASHINGTON — Shifty Shellshock, the frontman of the band Crazy Town who sang the hit 2000 song "Butterfly," has died. He was 49.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's website, Shellshock — whose real name was Seth Binzer — died Monday at his home. Details on a cause of death are not yet known.
Binzer and Bret "Epic" Mazur formed the group Crazy Town in 1999 and their hit single "Butterfly" was released the following year. The song spent 23 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 list and was in the top spot for two weeks in March 2001.
The original band broke up after their second album, "Darkhorse" in 2002, failed to garner much success. According to DEADLINE, the group reformed and released a third album in 2015. Mazur left the band in 2017.
Back in April 2023, Crazy Town was kicked off a tour after Binzer and guitarist Bobby Reeves got into a fistfight after a show in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fight reportedly began when Binzer didn't come onstage until the final song of the band's set, forcing Reeves to handle vocals. After the incident, the two said they were "all good." Binzer was then arrested for DUI in Myrtle Beach a few days after the incident, according to multiple reports.
Binzer was open through the years about his struggles with addiction. He appeared on VH1’s "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" in 2008 and "Sober House" from 2009 to 2010.
He is survived by his three children.
