WASHINGTON — Chicago police and the FBI are investigating food that was reported to have been intentionally contaminated Wednesday morning at a DNC breakfast at a downtown hotel.

Multiple female suspects entered the Fairmont Chicago, which was hosting a breakfast for delegates at the DNC and began placing “unknown objects” onto tables with food before leaving the area at around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

One person who ingested the food was treated by medical personnel and released at the scene, according to Chicago police.

Some reports suggested maggots were placed onto the food, while a witness told USA TODAY it appeared to be crickets.

According to WGN, the Fairmont is hosting delegates from Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri and South Dakota.

Axios reported it was the Indiana delegation's breakfast that was impacted.

“The safety and well-being of our delegation is our top priority," Indiana Democratic Party spokesperson Sam Barloga said in a statement. "All Americans have the right to peaceful protest, but ugly attacks like this have no place in our democracy. We thank the security team for responding swiftly.”

A delegate from South Dakota told WGN her morning meeting wasn't impacted. The Missouri delegate breakfast also wasn't affected, sources told KSDK
