Spectrum announces new prices for internet, network upgrades for existing customers

Even customers who stay with their current Spectrum internet plan will get faster internet speeds, according to the company.

WASHINGTON — Charter Communications has unveiled new pricing options and network upgrades for customers using Spectrum as their internet provider, an effort to entice people to join the service.

Spectrum's internet plans will begin at $30 a month for the 500 Mbps plan, and $40 for the company's 1 Gig internet plan if bundled with two lines of Spectrum Mobile and or Spectrum Video. Spectrum said those prices are locked in for up to three years, depending on the bundle a customer chooses.

Even customers who stay with their current plan will receive some benefit, Charter confirmed.

The company is increasing download speeds for current customers at no additional cost, with internet service going up 400 Mb/s for most plans, and ultra internet plans jumping to 600 Mb/s.

“This new commitment to our customers goes beyond words; it is about action,” Cliff Hagan, the Executive Vice President of Customer Operations for Charter, said in a statement.  “With approximately 100,000 employees, our customers are also our friends, family and neighbors, and we hold ourselves accountable to them. If we are charging for a service, it should work all the time; if it doesn’t, our customers should trust that we’ll make it right.

The new pricing plans come months after the Federal Communications Commission mandated new transparency rules for internet service providers regarding their internet plans.

The FCC's labels, following the design of FDA food labels, provide easy-to-understand, accurate information about the cost and performance of high-speed internet service to help consumers avoid junk fees, price hikes, and other unexpected costs.

The labels must appear at any point of sale, including online and in stores, and they are required to disclose all pricing information — including introductory rates, data allowances, and speeds. The labels also include links to information about network management practices and privacy policies.

Customers interested in taking advantage of Spectrum's new plans can call (855) 860-9068 to switch to the new pricing or to see how switching could affect their bill.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to clarify the $30 and $40 pricing is only valid when bundled with two lines of Spectrum Mobile and or Spectrum Video. Also, prices are locked for up to three years depending on the bundle a customer chooses.
