According to the Associated Press, the Ohio Republican has won reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives in Ohio's 16th Congressional District. Gonzalez had been challenged by Democratic candidate Aaron Godfrey, with the AP calling the race at 10:19 p.m. ET on Tuesday night.

A Cleveland St. Ignatius grad who went on to star at Ohio State before being selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, the 36-year-old Gonzalez initially won election to the U.S. House in 2018. In his first term in Congress, the 2006 first-team All-Big Ten selection and Academic All-American made headlines for his work proposing legislation for college athletes to receive compensation for their name, image and likeness (NIL).

"I actually think that we need to do something quickly, within the next year," Gonzalez told ESPN in October 2019, after California passed a state law restricting schools from punishing college athletes for earning endorsement money based on their name, image and/or likeness. Under NCAA laws, athletes who do receive money based on their likeness are subject to violations.

"I don't think you have three years to figure this out. I think decisions will start happening immediately."
