CLEVELAND — Several school districts across Northeast Ohio are asking voters to consider levies or bond issues on the ballot during the 2023 general election on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
3News compiled a list of some of the key school levies on the ballot in Northeast Ohio and has broken down the issues by county.
ASHTABULA COUNTY
Buckeye Local School District
- The Buckeye Local School District's Board of Education is placing an additional 0.5 mill tax raise and $46.6 million bond issue on the ballot in order to help build a new Pre-K-12 school and athletic stadium, as well as fund general permanent improvements. The bond will be repaid over the course of 37 years.
Conneaut Area City School District
- A 2 mill additional tax levy is being placed on the ballot for voters in the Conneaut Area City School District. If passed, the money will go toward general permanent improvements in the district.
CUYAHOGA COUNTY
Bedford City School District: Proposed bond issue
- A proposed $161 million bond issue in the Bedford City School District will be on the Nov. 7 ballot. If passed, the funding will be repaid over the course of 36 years. The money will go towards constructing, adding to, renovating, remodeling, furnishing, equipping and improving district buildings.
- Cuyahoga Community College has a levy on the Nov. 7 ballot that is requesting a 2.1 mill renewal levy with a 0.4 mill increase. The college will use the levy proceeds to "keep tuition affordable, provide up-to-date education and training, enable students to earn two years of college credit, and support technical education and workforce training."
Cuyahoga Heights Local School District
- An 8 mill additional tax levy will be on the ballot in November that will go toward the current operating expenses and general permanent improvements throughout the district.
Independence Local School District
- The Independence Local School District's Board of Education has placed an additional 3.85 mill tax levy on the November ballot, which will go towards emergency requirements in the district.
Orange City School District
- A 1.5 mill additional tax levy will be on the November ballot in the Orange City School District. If approved, the money will go towards general permanent improvements.
Shaker Heights City School District
- A 6.45 mill bond, a 0.5-mill tax issue and a 3-mill continuing levy are being placed on the ballot in Shaker Heights. If passed, the combined bond issue will renovate Ludlow to accommodate an expanded Pre-K program; renovate and expand Woodbury as a middle years building (Grades 6-8); renovate Boulevard, Lomond, Mercer and Onaway and convert them to include Grade 5; build an addition to Fernway to accommodate Grade 5.
GEAUGA COUNTY
Kenston Local School District
- The Kenston Board of Education has placed a 1.35 mill five-year additional tax levy on the Nov. 7 ballot. If passed, the funds will be used for capital improvement projects, maintenance and repairs, technology and wireless improvements as well as safety and security upgrades that are essential for district operation.
LAKE COUNTY
Mentor Public Schools
- A 2.5 mill additional tax levy is on the ballot for voters in Mentor. If passed, the money will be used for general permanent improvements within the district.
LORAIN COUNTY
Amherst Exempted Village School District
- The Amherst Exempted Village School District voters will have a 2.5 mill replacement of the district's existing Continuous Permanent Improvement (PI) levy. If passed, the funding will go toward replacing the aging transportation garage and fixing the district's outdoor athletic facilities.
- A $170 million bond issue is being proposed to voters in the Avon Lake City School District. If passed, the bond issue would provide funding to construct two new Pre-K-5th grade elementary schools as well as a new 6th-8th grade middle school, as well as provide renovations to Avon Lake High School. At the completion of the project, all students in Pre-K-8th grade in the district would be attending school in a new building.
- A $143 million bond issue will be on the ballot in the North Ridgeville City School District in November. If passed, the money will go toward constructing a new flagship high school, an attached auditorium and a transportation center for bussing and maintenance. The bond will be repaid over the course of 37 years.
MEDINA COUNTY
Medina City School District
- The Medina City Schools Board of Education is placing a $98.9 million bond and a 6.5-mill operating levy on the Nov. 7 ballot. If approved, the bond issue will go toward constructing, furnishing and equipping a new building for grades 7-8. Additionally, a new athletic stadium will be built and money will be used to go toward current operating expenses.
PORTAGE COUNTY
Aurora City School District
- A 5.9 mill additional tax levy to maintain the current operating expenses in the Aurora City School District will be on the Nov. 7 ballot.
Ravenna City School District
- A 6.9 mill additional tax levy will be on the ballot for the Nov. 7 election. If approved, the money will go toward funding curriculum and programming, retaining educators and improving facilities.
STARK COUNTY
- A combined $27.8 million bond issue and a 0.7 mill additional tax levy will be on the ballot for the Nov. 7 election. If approved, the money will go toward constructing, furnishing and equipping a new middle school, improving buildings and facilities and making permanent improvements in the district.
SUMMIT COUNTY
Hudson City School District
- Hudson City Schools has a 5.5 mill operating levy on the ballot this November. If passed, the funding would be used to sustain current operations at the schools. If passed, $7,243,000 of tax revenue would be generated annually for the district.
Mogadore Local School District
- A 5.9 mill additional tax levy will be on the ballot for voters in the Mogadore Local School District. If passed, the money will go towards current expenses in the district.
Springfield Local School District
- A 3.77 mill additional tax levy will be placed on the Nov. 7 ballot in the Springfield Local School District. If approved, the $1.74 million generated annually will go toward emergency requirements in the district.
Twinsburg City School District
- The Twinsburg Board of Education is placing a 5.9 mill levy on the Nov. 7 ballot. If passed, the district will generate $6.2 million annually for operating expenditures. The money will help the district maintain current class sizes, staffing levels, and programs to assist students in preparing for college and careers.
