CLEVELAND — On Tuesday, Ohio voters rejected the proposed Issue 1, which would have made it tougher to change the state's constitution.
Issue 1 would have raised the threshold to amending the Ohio Constitution from a simple majority to 60%. The special summer election is a precursor to November, when voters in Ohio will consider a constitutional amendment that would guarantee access to abortion.
Voters cast nearly 700,000 early in-person and mail ballots ahead of Tuesday’s final day of voting, more than double the number of advance votes in a typical primary election. Early turnout was especially heavy in the Democratic-leaning counties surrounding Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.
