CLEVELAND — Several school districts across Northeast Ohio asked voters to consider levies or bond issues on the ballot in the 2023 primary election on Tuesday.
3News compiled a list of some of the key school levies on the ballot in Northeast Ohio and has broken down results by county.
Cuyahoga County
Beachwood City School District: Proposed bond issue (PASSED)
- A proposed bond issue in the Beachwood City School District called for $65 million to be repaid over the course of 37 years. The money will go towards constructing and furnishing a new elementary school as well as renovating and improving other district buildings and facilities.
Garfield Heights City School District: Combined levy and bond issue (FAILED)
- Garfield Heights City School District placed a combined 8.6 mill issue on the ballot. The combined levy and bond issue for $19.5 million would have gone towards constructing, furnishing, renovating, remodeling and improving school district buildings and facilities as well as general permanent improvements.
Independence Local Schools: Renewal and increase (FAILED)
- Voters in Independence failed to pass a renewal of the school district’s current $4.2-million emergency operating levy plus a $3-million increase.
Parma City School District: Proposed bond issue (FAILED)
- The Parma City School District put a $199 million proposed bond issue on the ballot with plans for the money to go towards constructing, furnishing and equipping a new high school as well as improving other school district buildings and facilities. The bond would be repaid over the course of 36 years and will cost owners of a $100k home approximately $11.67 per month.
Ashtabula County
Conneaut Area School District: Proposed tax levy (PASSED)
- The Conneaut Area School District asked residents to approve a 2 mill tax levy that will go towards general permanent improvements within the school district.
Lake County
Kirtland Local School District: Tax levy renewal (PASSED)
- Voters passed a 10-year, 3.74-mill property tax levy renewal.
Lorain County
North Ridgeville City School District: Proposed bond issue (FAILED)
- A $190,025,000 proposed bond issue was placed on the ballot by the North Ridgeville City Schools Board of Education. The money was slated to go towards constructing adding to, renovating, remodeling, furnishing, improving and equipping district buildings. The bond would be repaid over 37 years.
Medina County
Brunswick City School District: Proposed bond issue (PASSED)
- The Brunswick Board of Education put a $102 million bond issue on the ballot with funding going towards constructing, furnishing and equipping a new high school as well as improving other district buildings and facilities. construction would begin in 2024 and the bond issue would cost the owner of a $100k home approximately $7.00 per month.
Buckeye Local School District: Proposed bond issue (FAILED)
- An $80 million bond issue would have provided funding towards constructing a new 7th through 12th grade building. The bond would have cost the owner of a $100k home approximately $16.33 per month.
Portage County
Ravenna City School District - Proposed Tax Levy (FAILED)
- A 6.9 mill, five year tax levy was being placed on the ballot for residents in the Ravenna City School District. The money was slated to go towards current expenses in the district.
Stark County
Canton City School District: Proposed Bond Issue (PASSED)
The Canton City School Board's $60 million bond issue will fund the construction, renovation, remodeling and furnishing of creating two new elementary school sites as well as district buildings and facilities. The bond would be repaid in 36 years.
Lake Local School District - Proposed tax levy (FAILED)
Lake Local School District residents voted down a 13-mill tax levy calling for the funding to go towards current expenses for the district.
Perry Local School District - Proposed tax levy (FAILED)
Voters rejected a 7.3 mill, five-year tax levy for Perry Local School District that would have provided funding for emergency requirements.
Summit County
Mogadore Local School District- Proposed tax levy (FAILED)
A 9.9 mill tax levy was rejected by voters living in the Mogadore Local School District. The levy would have provided funding for emergency requirements.
Springfield Local School District - Proposed tax levy (FAILED)
Voters in the Springfield Local School District will have a 3.77 mill, five-year tax levy placed on their ballot. The purpose of the levy is to provide funding for emergency requirements.
