CLEVELAND — On Election Day, Ohioans are heading to the polls to help select the man who will be the next President of the United States.
Will incumbent Donald Trump defy the odds again, as he did in 2016, and win a second term? Or is it Joe Biden's time?
No matter which candidate prevails, it's likely that Ohio will be under the national spotlight on Election Day. You've likely heard of the expression that "as Ohio goes, so goes the nation."
Well, it's true.
Ever since the modern Republican and Democratic parties have been the main focus of presidential elections, no Republican candidate has won the presidency without also winning Ohio. But while the Democrats haven't been completely shut out without Ohio's help, Democrats have only secured the presidency five times since 1856 without also taking Ohio:
- 1856: James Buchanan over John C. Fremont
- 1884: Grover Cleveland over James G. Blaine
- 1892: Grover Cleveland over Benjamin Harrison*
- Cleveland did win one elector from Ohio this year, Harrison won the other 22
- 1944: Franklin D. Roosevelt's fourth term, over Thomas E. Dewey
- 1960. John F. Kennedy over Richard M. Nixon
Cleveland captured center stage during this election cycle as the host site for the first debate between President Trump and former Vice President Biden. Since then, both campaigns have made several stops in Ohio, including a swing through Burke Lakefront Airport by Biden on Monday.
