CLEVELAND — We're less than a month away from the May 3 primary and the race for Ohio's 11th congressional district seat continues.
On Monday, former Ohio state Senator Nina Turner received additional backing when she was endorsed by former Northeast Ohio Congresswoman Mary Rose Oakar.
"Nina is a leader and that's what we need in greater Cleveland -- a fighter for the people who is committed to lifting working families. Nina will be tough and she will care, not just go along to get along," Oakar explained in a press release.
The support from Oakar comes just a day after the Cleveland Plain Dealer, again, endorsed Turner having previously done so in the 2021 August primary.
"We endorsed Nina Turner last year, and do so again this year. She has the passion, experience, toughness and out-of-the-box thinking to give Cleveland a powerful, socially committed and independent congressional voice," the long-time publication said in its announcement.
In an interview with 3News anchor and managing editor Russ Mitchell earlier this year, Turner said explained her reasons for running again.
“Greater Cleveland deserves a champion. Cleveland is the largest poor city in the country and this region really deserves a leader that is going to fight not just vote the right way," Turner told Mitchell.
It's that mindset that Oakar says makes Turner the best candidate for Congress.
"Nina Turner is the most qualified and capable person we can send to Congress. I would love to have her as my Congresswoman. I will be proud to have her represent me and my family,” said Oakar.
Turner will face congresswoman Shontel Brown in the May 3 primary.
