AKRON -- Organizers say the northeast Ohio facility used for the annual All-American Soap Box Derby will accommodate some after-dark events next year as they try to bring in revenue and make more use of the venue.
International Soap Box Derby President Joe Mazur (MAY'-zur) says they tested portable light towers this week at the historic Derby Downs track in Akron.
He tells the Akron Beacon Journal renting such lights as needed will enable nighttime rentals by other groups and benefit the main summertime event. He says the growing slate of races pushed the limits on how many events could be accommodated before running out of daylight.
Derby Downs hosted dozens of events this year to bring in revenue for the organization that has struggled financially in the past.
