March for Jayland Walker held in Akron to call for unity and justice

'This march will focus on unifying the community and creating a city where all Akronites can thrive and live safely.'

AKRON, Ohio — A march was held in Akron at 1 p.m. on Monday as a group gathered to demand unity and justice for Jayland Walker, who was shot and killed by eight officers amid an overnight chase more than three months ago.

Groups who participated in the Monday march at Grace Park included The Freedom BLOCK, Akron Urban League, Akron NAACP and St. Ashworth Temple.

You can watch a live stream of the march, as well as comments from Walker's family and its attorney, in the video player at the bottom of this page.

“This march will focus on unifying the community and creating a city where all Akronites can thrive and live safely,” organizers said in a press release. “This march will also be an opportunity for participants to register to vote in order to use their collective power at the ballot box in next month’s midterm elections.”

Walker was shot and killed on June 27 when eight Akron police officers opened fire amid an overnight chase. Police say Walker had fired a shot at one point during the vehicle pursuit, but was unarmed at the time officers opened fire as the chase continued on foot. A gun was later found in Walker's vehicle, according to police.

The shooting remains under review by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
