AKRON, Ohio — On the night before Jayland Walker is scheduled to be laid to rest, his family and community faith leaders hosted a gathering "to promote unity and healing" in the wake of his shooting death at the hands of Akron police.
The unity gathering took place Tuesday evening at The Remedy Church on Brittain Road in the Chapel Hill neighborhood. Walker died early in the morning of June 27 in the parking lot of Bridgestone's headquarters, having been shot dozens of times by eight Akron officers. The 25-year-old was not armed at the time of the shooting, but authorities claim he had earlier fired a gun out of his car during a pursuit with law enforcement and later made a motion that caused officers to fear for their lives.
Walker's funeral will be held at Akron Civic Theatre on Wednesday, with calling hours from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. followed by services at 1 p.m. The Ohio Bureau of Investigation has taken over the probe into Walker's death.
