I PROMISE principal placed on administrative leave amid allegation of striking student

"We take all such allegations seriously, while also respecting the rights of staff accused of wrongdoing to due process."

AKRON, Ohio — The principal of the I PROMISE School in Akron has been placed on administrative leave amid an allegation that she hit an 11-year-old student.

According to a statement from Akron Public Schools, Brandi Davis will remain on leave pending the outcome of the district's fact-finding investigation. 

"Akron Public Schools has begun an investigation into an allegation that a child was struck by a staff member at I PROMISE School. We take all such allegations seriously, while also respecting the rights of staff accused of wrongdoing to due process," Akron Public Schools spokesman Mark Williamson said in a statement.

In a report from the Akron Police Department shared with 3News, Davis called the mother of the student at around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The mother told police that Davis reported to her that her son said "someone shitted in the urinal" and Davis said she slapped him. The mother picked her son up from the school and took him to the board of education.

Opened in 2018, the I PROMISE school is sponsored by the LeBron James Family Foundation, but is part of Akron Public Schools. WKYC is a media partner of the I PROMISE school. 

Davis has been the principal of the I PROMISE school since its inception. She been has also been on the board of the LeBron James Family Foundation since it was created.

“We are family, and that means we support every one of our I PROMISE educators, students, and family members through anything they may be going through. In this and in every case, we will always do everything we can to make sure all are loved and supported during these times as we learn and grow as a family," the LeBron James Family Foundation told 3News in a statement.
