Meet the local voice of AOL's 'You've Got Mail'

Long-time WKYC employee, Elwood Edwards, has a voice that's known around the world.
Elwood Edwards, long-time employee at WKYC, is also the famous voice behind AOL's "Welcome. You've got mail."

CLEVELAND -- His voice is known around the world for four simple phrases.

"Welcome."

"You've got mail."

"File's done."

"Goodbye."

Those iconic AOL sayings have permeated pop culture. "You've Got Mail" even became the title of a Tom Hanks flick.

But here's a little secret. The man who voiced those famous phrases, Elwood Edwards, is one of our employees here at WKYC-TV.

Elwood has worked with us for years in various roles.

He's typically behind the camera, but Thursday, he was shining in the national spotlight as a special guest on the "Today" show.

Elwood was in the Orange Room with Carson Daly for a "throwback Thursday" segment to explain how he became the voice of AOL.

It was in 1989 when Elwood recorded the AOL phrases on a cassette deck in his living room when his wife volunteered him.

The rest is history.

Two years ago, AOL stopped by our studios here in downtown Cleveland to record an update with Elwood.

During a recent visit to our studios, former "Saturday Night Live" cast member and comedian, Jim Brewer, made a YouTube video about Elwood's AOL fame.

Earlier this week, Elwood announced his retirement, which means his last day with us will be Friday, April 4. We wish him all the best!

And we will never forget those famous words. How could we?
