The Ohio Democratic Party is hosted a news conference Wednesday to protest President Trump's planned visit to Canton later in the day.
The news conference took place from the United Steelworkers Local 1123 Golden Lodge on Harrison Ave. Speakers included American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, United Steelworkers Local 1123 President Bob Harper, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, Canton City Council President William Sherer II, and a former worker at the now-closed General Motors Lordstown plant.
The event was entitled "We Stand With Ohio Workers," and focused on the shutting down of the Lordstown facility. While the president has expressed his dismay at the plant's closure, Democrats have attacked him for his supposed blame of labor unions for the situation. Trump tweeted just last Sunday that United Auto Workers 1112 President David Green "ought to get his act together and produce."
Speakers took their turns calling out the president, with Ryan calling the auto industry situation "a s--t storm." The former Lordstown worker also claimed Trump "has not lifted one finger" to help families affected by the closing.
A "We Stand With Ohio Workers" event was also scheduled for Lima around the same time. Trump is expected to tour the Lima Army Tank Plant and give remarks their this afternoon before traveling to Canton for a re-election fundraiser.
