What time does the solar eclipse happen today in Northeast Ohio? Check this list to see when you can watch in your area

While it's easy to find eclipse times for major cities like Cleveland, you might be wondering what is the best time for your family to watch it happen in your area.

CLEVELAND — It's a once-in-a-lifetime moment as Northeast Ohio finds itself in the path of a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8 -- and one of the top questions you might be asking is what time does it happen?

While it's easy to find exact eclipse times for major cities like Cleveland, you might be wondering what is the best time for your family to watch it happen from your own neighborhood.

We've compiled a list of eclipse times for dozens of Northeast Ohio communities that are all within the path of totality.

It's important to note that eclipse times don't vary all that much, so if you don't find your specific city included below, you can find the closest one from our list to get a pretty accurate idea of when prime viewing will happen near you.

The path of totality actually slides right through Northeast Ohio with Canton and areas south narrowly missing out on full totality. This means these areas won't see the full blockage of the sun, but it will be pretty darn close.

So why is this happening? Here's how NASA explains the science behind a solar eclipse...

Solar eclipses occur when the Sun, the Moon, and Earth line up, either fully or partially. Depending on how they align, eclipses provide a unique, exciting view of either the Sun or the Moon.

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the Sun’s light in some areas. This only happens occasionally, because the Moon doesn't orbit in the exact same plane as the Sun and Earth do. The time when they are aligned is known as eclipse season, which happens twice a year.
