EAST LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan State University basketball player is recovering after being shot in the leg, according to Michigan State Athletics.

The athletic department said Jeremy Fears Jr. suffered a gunshot wound in the leg early Saturday in the Joliet area in Illinois.

The Joliet Police Department said on Saturday around 3:44 a.m., officers responded to a home in the 300 block of St. Jude Avenue for a call stating two people inside the home had been shot.

According to police, officers who arrived at the scene found a 19-year-old woman had been shot in the pelvis and Fears Jr. had been shot in his left thigh. Both injuries were considered non-life-threatening, police said.

The Joliet Police Department found in a preliminary investigation that both victims were inside the home when a male suspect with a handgun entered through the front door and began firing, shooting both victims. Officers said he then ran from the scene.

The department said officers conducted an extensive search of the area but weren't able to find the suspect. Currently, the motive and intended target of the shooting is unknown and still being investigated.
