Akron Public Schools announced today that the district’s board of education formally approved the hiring of Sonil Haslam as North High School’s next varsity football head coach during its regular meeting on Monday.
Haslam has coached for more than 20 years at a variety of Akron-area public and private schools, most recently working as assistant head coach at Firestone in 2015.
“Sonil's experience, with both varsity football and our diverse population, as well as his vision for our program made him a top candidate for the head coaching position,” North athletic director Carrie Stewart said.
The Vikings were winless in 2015.
“I want to work hard for the North High School community, APS and the young adults at North to give them a program that everyone can be proud of,” Haslam said in a prepared statement provided by the district.
Haslam has been employed for the past 12 years at Akron's YMCA Phoenix School, where he works as the transition coordinator.
