Ryan Day takes ownership of Ohio State’s 4th straight loss to Michigan

Day now has a 1-4 record against Michigan.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Head coach Ryan Day spoke to the media after Ohio State's 13-10 loss to Michigan, marking the team's fourth straight loss to the Wolverines.

Ohio State and Michigan were meeting for their 120th matchup on Saturday at the 'Shoe in a must-win game for the Buckeyes after losing the last three against "The Team Up North."

Michigan came into "The Game" with a 61-51-6 record all-time over Ohio State.

After the loss, Day now has a 1-4 record against Michigan.

"I got a locker room full of guys who are just devastated," Day said. "I thought they played with great emotion, I thought the defense played their tails off and I thought everybody played hard. Just the overall execution wasn't good enough, especially on offense. We couldn't control the game."

This loss might have been the toughest of the last four for Ohio State because the Wolverines were unranked and were wrapping up a disappointing season. The Buckeyes were supposed to win, but records rarely mean much when these two teams meet.

"It's not easy to accept. I obviously have to take the ownership. I'm the one that ultimately makes the final decisions on things and it felt like we were in a really good place coming into this game," Day said.

Day spoke about the uncertainty of what comes next after this unexpected loss.

"We're very disappointed and never thought this would happen right here. We were expecting to win this game and then go play in the Big Ten Championship game and neither of those things happened," he said.

Once the clock hit zero, Michigan wasted no time celebrating their win on the field. But a fight broke out between the players after Michigan players tried to plant a flag at midfield. At one point, Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer was able to grab the flag and rip it off of the ball before walking away.

When asked about the brawl, Day said he didn't know all the details.

"I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren't gonna let that happen," he said. "This is our field and certainly we're embarrassed with the fact we lost the game, but there are some prideful guys on this team that weren't just gonna let that happen."

Ohio State needs No. 4 Penn State and No. 10 Indiana to lose later Saturday in order to make it into the Big Ten title game next week. Their final standing in the College Football Playoff will be revealed on Dec. 8.
