AKRON, Ohio — Fore! The Bridgestone Senior Players Championship is coming your way.
The coronavirus pandemic has left many athletes in limbo and uncertain of their upcoming seasons. On Wednesday, the golf industry was granted a sign of hope.
Officials announced that the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship in Akron has been rescheduled. Originally slated to take place the week of July 6-12, the popular event will now occur August 10- 16.
"We will continue to monitor the ongoing COVID-19 situation at the federal, state and local levels, and will follow all recommendations made in conjunction with the PGA Tour. The health and safety of our players, fans, volunteers and partners will remain our No. 1 priority,” said Executive Director Don Padgett in a press release.
Despite the five week delay, the tournament will still be held at Firestone County Club in Akron. 2020 marks Akron’s second year hosting a PGA Tour Champions major championship.
The tournament raises money for several local charities and organizations including Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Akron Children’s Hospital, The First Tee of Greater Akron, Summa Health System, Cleveland Clinic Akron General, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and United Way of Summit County.
"The Bridgestone Senior Players Championship will continue to support key charities in our area that have meant so much to Northeast Ohio throughout this difficult time," said Padgett.
For nearly 40 years, Firestone Country Club has held professional golfing events raising more than $25 million.
