— Benedictine Bengals (@bhs_bengals) March 9, 2016Welo, a 2003 St. Ignatius graduate and 2007 John Carroll University alum, has served as an assistant coach at Notre Dame College since 2009. Last season, he served as the program’s special teams’ coordinator and coached the Falcons’ running backs.
"We look forward to the future as Carter as our new head coach," Benedictine athletic director Chris Lorber said in the release. "At Notre Dame College, he made regular stops at Benedictine while on the recruiting trail. He is familiar with our traditions and expectations, and brings a solid coaching background."
Welo replaces Joe Schaefer, who resigned in February to join the football staff at the University of Maryland as a defensive quality control coach. Schaefer’s new position was first reported by WKYC.
“Growing up in the Cleveland area, I am certainly aware of the outstanding academic and football traditions at Benedictine High School,” Welo said in a prepared statement provided by the school.” It’s a very humbling honor to become a part of this great legacy.”
Welo, who becomes Benedictine’s 19th gridiron head coach, was a starter on St. Ignatius’ 2001 state championship team and played in college before a hip injury prematurely ended his playing career.
In addition to his coaching duties, Welo will also replace Schaefer as the school's priory director.
